VdB 31 is the blue reflection nebula intermixed with the dark nebula, LDN 1519, creeping off this picture's top edge. The dark nebula pushes forward as the prominent features of this image, however.

The star AB Aurigae, a Herbig-Haro star, lies at the center of vdB 31. This star has received extensive attention lately because of its protoplanetary disk, where there appears to be a planet in the process of forming. The accompanying ESO image (B), center on the star's location, shows two spiral dust arms around AB Aurigae. Around 5:00 and close to the star (not shown), the kink in the arm is interpreted to be a nascent planet.

Dust pervades virtually the entire picture, and stars appear to reside in its foreground and within it and behind it, but predominantly behind it. The nebula is faint and the stars abundant, so to bring out the nebula, I employed StarNet and returned the stars to the image with a bit of tempering of their magnitudes to allow the nebulosity to be seen.
