Description

NGC 2736 is an emission nebula in the Vela constellation, around 815 light years from earth.

What you're looking at, is (part of) the remnants of a star that came to its end in a supernova roughly 11000 years ago. The bright and colourful appearance of the region is the result of gas having been impacted by said supernova's shock wave. Very simply put, the impact of the shockwave energizes and heats the material, which then slowly cools down over time.

Very similar to what we're used to seeing here on earth; the blue'ish regions are the hottest. As we move more and more towards orange/red, the temperature drops (indicating that said regions have considerably cooled down since the impact).
