Description

IC 443 (also known as the Jellyfish Nebula) is a galactic supernova remnant. Its distance is roughly 5,000 light-years from Earth and is estimated to be roughly 70 light-years in size. The supernova occurred between 3,000 and 30,000 years ago.  The supernova event produced the nebula and a neutron star. The supernova was triggered by a rapid collapse of a star with a mass at least 8 times that of the Sun. The neutron star is moving away from the site at about 500,000 miles per hour.  Neutron stars are much too small and faint to view in any but the world's largest telescopes.
