Description

Messier 94 (also known as NGC 4736) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, 16Mly away (4.91MPc).
It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781, and catalogued by Charles Messier two days later. Although some references describe M94 as a barred spiral galaxy, the "bar" structure appears to be more oval-shaped. The galaxy has two ring structures.

The background hosts a galore of distant galaxies, some laying well beyond 1 Billion ly away; for instance the following ones, all located in the lower right hand quadrant of the larger field picture here (distances in Million Parsec, 1 Pc = 3,26 ly)
