In the time between the change from winter to summer, I was looking for a suitable object for a small focal length (135 mm). Melotte 111 (Mel 111) has offered itself as a good candidate. The area is rich in background galaxies, with NGC 4565 standing out a bit more.

Melotte 111, or the Coma-Berenices Star Cluster, is an open star cluster in the constellation of Berenices Hair that can be observed with the naked eye. The star cluster forms the main part of the constellation Hair of Berenice. In addition, the impression of this star cluster with the naked eye was probably eponymous for the constellation.

The extent of the star cluster is about 4.5°, or - at a distance of 280 light-years - about 20 light-years. Its age is estimated at 500 million years based on its stellar population.

Known since ancient times for its size and brightness, this star cluster was first cataloged by Ptolemy. However, like many other star clusters that are very close to Earth and therefore have a large apparent diameter (e.g. the Ursa Major group or the Hyades), it has not been included in the modern standard catalogs Messier, NGC and IC added. First P.J. Melotte included the cluster in his catalog of open star clusters in 1915. The cluster can also be found in Per Collinder's catalog under the designation Cr 256.

In der Zeit zwischen dem wechsel vom Winter in den Sommer habe ich nach einem geeigneten Objekt für eine kleine Brennweite (135 mm) gesucht. Als guter Kandidat hat sich Melotte 111 (Mel 111) angeboten. Das Gebiet ist reich an Hintergrundgalaxien, wobei NGC 4565 etwas stärker heraussticht

Melotte 111 oder der Coma-Berenices-Sternhaufen ist ein offener Sternhaufen im Sternbild Haar der Berenike, der mit bloßem Auge beobachtet werden kann. Der Sternhaufen bildet den Hauptteil des Sternbildes Haar der Berenike. Zudem war der Eindruck dieses Sternhaufens mit dem bloßen Auge wohl namensgebend für das Sternbild.

Die Ausdehnung des Sternhaufens beträgt etwa 4,5°, bzw. – bei einer Entfernung von 280 Lichtjahren – etwa 20 Lichtjahre. Das Alter wird aufgrund seiner Sternpopulation auf 500 Millionen Jahre geschätzt.

Durch seine Größe und Helligkeit ist dieser Sternhaufen seit der Antike bekannt und wurde zum ersten Mal von Ptolemäus katalogisiert. Wie viele andere Sternhaufen, die eine sehr geringe Entfernung zur Erde haben und daher einen großen scheinbaren Durchmesser besitzen (z. B. die Ursa-Major-Gruppe oder die Hyaden), wurde er jedoch nicht in die modernen Standard-Kataloge Messier, NGC und IC aufgenommen. Erst P.J. Melotte nahm den Haufen 1915 in seinen Katalog offener Sternhaufen auf. Unter der Bezeichnung Cr 256 ist der Haufen ebenfalls im Katalog von Per Collinder zu finden.
