Description

Melotte 15 is a open star cluster at the center of IC1805 also known as the Heart nebula.  Located in the constellation Cassiopeia, the cluster contains many bright stars that are up to 50 times as massive as the sun.  They are blasting the surrounding hydrogen gas with intense radiation which causes the region to glow and emit light.

The Melotte 15 cluster is literally the heart of the Heart nebula, and the main source of the energy required for it to glow in the familiar heart shape.  The entire complex is roughly 7,500 light years away from earth.  This image is a closeup of the star cluster itself.  Little of the surrounding nebula is visible in the frame.

Fortunately, I have had a full week of clear nights that have been perfect for imaging.  Unfortunately this means very little sleep.  But I'll take a bit of sleep deprivation after the long wet season!  I was able to capture 25 hours of data on this target.
