Description

This image contains two nebulas. Sh2-248, the Jellyfish Nebula is an emission nebula in the lower right. A portion of Sh2-249, a reflection nebula, is in the upper left. Both are large and faint (magnitude 12) nebula located in the constellation Gemini around 5000 light years from earth. Sh2-248’s size is around 70 light years or 50 arc-minutes.  Sh2-249’s size is somewhat larger.  By comparison, our moon is around 30 arc-minutes.  Since my rig’s field of view is only around 100 arc-minutes, I set my imaging coordinates to include all of Sh2-248 cutting off a portion of Sh2-249.Sh2-248 contains the remnants of a supernova explosion that occurred approximately 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. The nebula is primarily composed of hydrogen gas that has been ionized and shaped by the radiation emitted by a nearby massive cluster of hot stars.Sh2-249, is a reflection nebula, composed of a cloud of dust and gas and illuminated by nearby stars. My image is the result of 29 hours (1160 sub-frames) imaged with an Optolong L-Ultimate dual band filter over 13 nights from Jan through early March of 2024.  I used Pixinsight to process the image.  The HOO color palate was obtained by applying a mask of the Oiii areas on the stretched image.  The mask was created from an HOO image produced by applying the Narrowband Normalization process to the same stretched image. Surprisingly, the L-Ultimate filter produced a large, strong, and very difficult halo around the bright star Tejat in the lower right.
