Description

Caldwell 12 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Cepheus. It's also known as the Fireworks Galaxy.  The galaxy gets its name from the frequent supernova that have been seen there.  It's located on the border of the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus. 

Caldwell 12 was discovered by astronomer William Herschel in September of 1798.  It's about 22 million light years away and about 40,000 light years across. 

Caldwell 12 is best viewed during the fall. It's catalogued as Caldwell 12 in the Caldwell catalogue of 109 deep sky objects that can be observed with amateur telescopes. 

This picture was taken wih a GSO RC8 telescope at a Focal length of 1625mm.  It is made up of an integration of 230 5 minute images.  A touch over 19 hours of exposure.  

The fireworks galaxy is not a very bright object and is fronted by numerous stars from our own galaxy.  The galaxy is far beyond the starfield in the image.
