Description

Messier Object 3 is a globular cluster in the constellation of Canes Venatici along the boarder of Bootes. Charles Messier discovered this bright ball of stars on May 3, 1764, and it was the first of his now famous list of 110 objects he discovered himself. It is considered to have a mass of around 450,000 suns and is located some 33,900 light years away. It's small radius of only 90 light years means that this mass of 450,000 solar masses is inside a ball of space which is only 180 light years in diameter. If you think about that a minute it seems like a long distance, but in reality it is a very small volume. If the Earth were somehow in a stable orbit around a star on the inside this cluster, likely there would never be night-time. Like all star clusters, the makeup of he material within the stars of the cluster have similar metallicity and therefore likely originated from the same interstellar gas cloud. This cluster is a rich collection of both red and blue stars as some of the heavier stars have progressed through the HR progression further and are now red giants. This give wonderful color to this stellar jewel box.
