Description

48 x 600s OSC Narrowband
180 x 60s OSC RGB

This is a 6-panel mosaic taken over multiple nights back in the summer when the nights were short. Fitting 6 panels in each night meant for lower exposures than is needed for this target and typically, during a week of clear skies there was a full moon, not great for teasing out the faint traces of OIII that make up The Squid, OU4 or the RGB needed for Barnard150.

An ambitious project for myself, that has stretched me and taught me some new things. I have read elsewhere about this target and found out for myself that getting enough OIII data, preferably not during a Full Moon, is important but dealing with the noise is harder still. My data was left with swathes of green/blue across the centre which forced a steep learning curve in masking in order to bring out the wanted signal.

I will hope to return to this target in the future and gather better data, I can't help thinking a mono camera would be better, but I am yet to try that and so cannot rightfully compare. This will have to do for this year. Unfortunately, the three panels surrounding OU4 require more data, and this can be seen in the image. I don't want to spend any more time on the data I have and have enjoyed learning new techniques along the way. There are other targets to visit.

The panels consist of 4 narrowband for Sh2-129/OU4 and 2 RGB for Barnard150. These were much easier to process separately, and I will post them later. It was a challenge to blend the two and I hope the result is worth my effort. I don't think I could do it any better.............yet
