Description

This is the Bear Claw Nebula in Cassiopeia. It has very low surface brightness and was a challenge to expose as well as process. I actually gave up once along the path to the finished image, but picked it up again and finished it off as well as I could.

The details in this nebula are very interesting. It looks like a little blue meat pie. The centre has ridges of OIII detail, with some Ha on the outer edges. There is a dark circle around the circumference. Outside of this circle there is more OIII followed by a large area of Ha.

I had just given the ring and worm gears in my CEM60 a good cleaning to get rid of a summer's worth of spiders and earwigs, and it was tracking pretty well so I tried 15 minute subs for the first time. The best stretched and calibrated OIII sub exposure is presented as the other version of this image. You can see why I initially gave up - there is not much detail even after 15 minutes!
