Description

The Cocoon Nebula is a reflection/emission nebula of about 15 light-years across that surrounds a young, open star cluster catalogued as Collinder 470.  It is located about 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.  It is both a reflection and an emission nebula; a reflection nebula reflects the light of nearby stars, while an emission nebula emits light when nearby stars ionize the gas.  The reflected component (the bluish area along the perimeter) is largely due to the light from the star located near the center of the nebula, which is a hot, young star known as BD +46°3474.  In fact, it may actually be a binary system.  The nebula is located on the edge of a large molecular cloud, and there is active star formation in this stellar nursery.

It is possible to observe this nebula visually, but a dark sky is required to really see it.  I observed it in 2010 with a 20” reflector, and found the hazy glow and lovely star field to be enchanting.
