Description

NGC292 is a dwarf irregular galaxy that is very close to our own Milky Way, roughly 200,000 light years away.  It contains several hundred million stars.  It is speculated that at one time it was a barred spiral galaxy, but over time it was disrupted by the close proximity and gravitational interaction with the much larger Milky Way transforming it into the irregular blob that it is today.

The image was captured using the ASA H8 Hyperbolic f2.9 scope at the Hakos Astrofarm in Namibia, part of the Skygems network.  It is a pure RGB image, with Ha data blended in to highlight the nebulosity and star forming regions of the system.

I have struggled with this scope so far, dealing with significant flat field errors and halos around bright stars.  But this target does not have large bright stars and I have learned to work around the flat field error.  Overall I am satisfied with the result.  The file is massive as a result of the very high resolution of this camera.  It is worth viewing the full resolution version as the tiny details are pretty mesmerizing.
