Description

A grand design spiral galaxy, Ngc 1232 is located in Eridanus at a distance of about 60 million light years. With an apparent size of about 7' x 6'', the galaxy shows a hint of a central bar and well defined arms emerging from the nucleus. Nearby Ngc 1232A (or B in some literature), the small galaxy at the edge of the eastern arm, is not interacting with Ngc 1232 and is estimated at a distance of 70 million light years with a different redshift; it is thought to be a starburst galaxy. The size of Ngc 1232 is midway between the Andromeda galaxy and the Milky Way.
