Description

This is an animated gif of the movement of Pallas (designated 2 Pallas) along with a couple of photobombing satellites. It comprises 17*30 second frames spaced 5 minutes apart (total elapsed time of 85minutes) and was taken on the 13 January 2023. The asteroid at this time was approximately 600 million kilometres from Earth, had a magnitude of 7.58, and was located in the constellation of Canis Major, some distance from the ecliptic. With a diameter of 513 ± 3 km, Pallas is the third largest asteroid in the solar system after Ceres and Vesta. Due to its high orbital inclination, Pallas has much larger impact craters than on Ceres and Vesta due to the much higher impact velocity of objects hitting it. It has not been visited by any spacecraft but has been imaged by the HST and studied using ground-based observations. From what we know, it is densely cratered place with over 30 craters in excess of 40km in size. It is roughly ellipsoidal in shape and is comprised of silicate material. It completes a rotation every 7.81 hours and has an orbital period of 4.62 years.
