Description

This object is a shows an assortment of galaxies located in the southern constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -10 degrees.

The group of 5 galaxies at upper left is Hickson 23. The biggest at brightest of these, at magnitude 15, is the ringed grand spiral NGC 1215. Like the 4 other larger galaxies at upper left, it is about 220 million light years away. NGC 1215 is the largest of these, at a diameter of 120,000 light years. Of these 4, one is exactly edge-on, and the other 3 all show evidence of a mid-disk ring.

The small “companion” just above NGC 1215 is the only one of these 5 galaxies which is not at the same distance – it is twice as far away at about a half billion light years away. It is not uncommon for the galaxies of Hickson groups to be at different distances – many are simply line of sight alignments.

The other galaxies in this image are not part of the Hickson group. The beautiful yellow ringed spiral at upper right is NGC 1208. This galaxy is a bit closer at 190 million light years.

At the bottom right is the huge elliptical IC 1880. Although it looks the same size as the other galaxies in the image, it is twice as far away at 440 million light years. It has a whopping diameter of 300,000 light years.
