Description

I observed this object on 18 May 2023 at the Texas Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: Though this is one of the most distant GCs it is bright and easy to spot. It has a small bright core and a significant halo.

One of the oldest GCs in the Milky Way Galaxy, at 12 Gyr. Its chemical composition is highly peculiar, being highly (to nearly solar levels) enriched in alpha elements, suggesting an extragalactic origin before being captured by the Milky Way.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: VII
Distance: 114,170 LY
Type: Far Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Very high above the MW and on the far side of the core.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
