Description

The Ring Nebula (M57) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Lyra, at a distance of about 2,600 light-years from Earth. Planetary nebulae are formed when a shell of ionized gas is expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a star in the last stages of its evolution before becoming a white dwarf.

This image was made using broadband red, green and blue filters and a narrowband filter for hydrogen-alpha emission. Equipment was a Celestron EdgeHD C11 with 0.7x focal reducer, Sky-Watcher EQ8-R Pro mount, and ZWO ASI1600MM Pro camera. All RGB sub-exposures were 30 seconds in duration, while the Ha subs were each 5 minutes. Total integration time was only 2.5 hours.

Acquisition software was N.I.N.A. and processing was PixInsight and Photoshop. Addition of the Ha emission around the nebula was done using PixelMath.
