Description

Ha exposure of the California Nebula, taken for a display at Vanderbilt University relating to the great visual observer E.E. Barnard. The image was acquired with a 6" refractor, the same type and size telescope that Barnard used to discover it November 3, 1885 from Vanderbilt's main campus in Nashville, TN. See his note in the January 1886 Sidereal Messenger attached as a revision image.  The telescope he used now resides at Vanderbilt's Dyer Observatory.  His view of the nebula through the eyepiece more closely resembled the additional image attached as a revision, which was a short exposure taken through a blue filter. December 30, 2011 & January 23, 2012.
