Description

Four galaxies in this image, NGC 4631 is the large vertically orientated galaxy on the upper left. This galaxy is also known as "The Whale" or Caldwell 32 (one of Sir Patrick Moore’s Caldwell list) near it and to its left is its companion galaxy NGC 4627 while the hockey stick like galaxy at the bottom is two galaxies – NGC 4656 and 4657.

These galaxies are in the constellation Canes Venatici, with the Whale at about 22 million light years away and is about the same size as our own Milky Way galaxy. The Whale is an example of an edge on (from our perspective) barred spiral.

This is a composite (stacked) image made up of 100 individual frames, each of 3 minutes, for a total exposure time of more than 3 hours. The individual frames were captured from my backyard over two nights (May 13 and 14th 2021)
