Description

"Managing these would restore him to a sense of control. Soon human meaning would be bleached from the rocks, the landscape would assume its beauty and draw him in; the unimaginable age of the mountains and the fine mesh of living things that lay across them would remind him that he was part of this order and insignificant within it, and he would be set free"
- Amsterdam, Ian McEwan

25 June 2022: The Eagle Nebula, Pillars of Creation

I’ve very much enjoyed seeing everyone’s ‘Pillars’ this season, and it’s taken me a while to get these to a state I’m happy with. Lately, it seems that every time I boot up the computer to start working on this, I’m over whelmed by size and age and insignificance – plus I’ve been on a bit of an Ian McEwan binge too, as you can probably tell.

I remember many, many years ago seeing the Hubble image for the first time and being absolutely blown away by the sheer size and scale of them, and the complete and utter insignificance of our own planet in comparison.

These ‘Pillars’ are so named – Pillars of Creation - due to the dust and gases creating an immense star forming region.
