Description

This pair of objects is located in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +11 degrees.

The edge-on galaxy is NGC 4762, located 35 million light years away. It is recognized as the flattest galaxy in the universe. This 10.3 magnitude edge-on galaxy spans 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 90,000 light years. I love the distortion seen in the star streams. Scientists believe that an unseen companion, perhaps long absorbed, is responsible for the disturbance.

The spiral galaxy on the right is NGC 4754. It is located much closer to us at 50 million light years away. This 10.8 magnitude galaxy spans about half of length of NGC 4762 in our apparent view and has an actual diameter of 70,000 light years. I like the short stubby galaxy arms that are seen in the middle region of the disk.
