Description

There is something very appealing about parring things back to a dslr and lens.

This opens the possibility of using very fast lenses, although this is often not realised in practice because of a multitude of potential aberrations.

Over the last year or so I have tested several lenses, with the best of the bunch so far being the Sigma Art 40mm f1.4.
One can get away just about running it fully open at 1.4 if you are not a pixel peeper, otherwise as in this image it  is best to substitute the stars imaged
at f2.8.

This is 2hrs worth of data which clearly reveal the IFN around Polaris and beyond.
It was imaged with a Canon 800Da as I wanted to minimise issues of tilt and backspacing in the first instance.
I will now go on to see how much pain is involved in using the lens with my ASI2600MC.

At 40mm with an APSC sensor it is possible to image the whole of Ursa Minor  in one frame, which nicely reveals the distribution of the IFN throughout the constellation.

Update 13/7/2023

Re-processed by Roger Johnson (@rog) with a much more pleasing outcome.

More data still required and/or switch to using the asi2600mc.
