Description

This object is an interacting galaxy pair located about a half billion light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -20 degrees. The top galaxy is ESO 566-8 and the bottom galaxy is ESO 566-7. Not counting the star streams, each galaxy spans about 20 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of about 50,000 light years. I love this Arp object.

The star streams are the star of the show here. There are 3 star streams, one connecting the 2 galaxies and one on either side. Each of these star stream segments extends for about 300,000 light years. I like the subtle variations in brightness and color along the length of the star stream path. I also like the curving arcs of the streams.

If you enjoy star streams as much as I do, my gallery of star stream objects is here.
