The 'Whale' (NGC 4631 - top right in this image) is an edge-on spiral galaxy located 25 million light years away in Canes Venatici. Sitting above is the small companion (NGC 4627). Below and to the left is another edge-on spiral known as the 'Hockey Stick’ (NGC 4656). NGC 4656 is around 30 million light years distant. Both galaxies were first observed by William Herschel on 20 March 1787.
The Whale and Hockey Stick were photographed between 24 February and 19 March 2020 from a rig in Spain that is privately owned and operated by Barry Wilson and me.
