Description

Evolution of my M31 captures during the autumn/winter 2019. This shows my learning curve nicely. I started with a simple mechanical star tracker and learnt a lot from that point on...

Revision A: My first try using the Omegon LX2 star tracker. Messed up the polar align. Managed only 8s subs at 105mm. Stacked in DSS, edited in GIMP.

Revision B: Added 18x30s and 30x60s subs at 105mm, same LX2 tracker. Started using a light-pollution filter.

Revision C: Re-edited the previous data in APP and GIMP.

Revision D: 2h of new data, StarAdventurer mount, longer focal length. Better processing in APP and GIMP.

Revision F: Combined all 105mm and 195mm data for my final revision. I stacked the 195mm subs in APP with SuperPixel debayering to result in 8 arcsec/px scale, which is close to the 7.7 arcsec/px scale of my 105mm lens. I then let APP stack both stacked images at each focal length. I then removed gradients, did a color calibration and stretch in APP. In GIMP I created an artifical luminance layer so I can edit L and RGB seperately. I set the blackpoint, did a targeted curve stretch for some more detail. I lowered the color temperature to 5000K. For the first time, the faint blue tones at the outer edges of the galaxy become visible.

Revision H: I tried some minor deconvulution in SIRIL (no starmasks, so I couldn't do too much). I also improved in stretching and post-processing in APP and GIMP.

Revision J: Post-processed the Stack from APP in PixInsight, using the trial. Colors could be better but denoise is far better. I understand why people like PI.

Revision K: Revision J from PixInsight with some slight star size reduction.

There is still much room for improvement. Longer integration time (!) & better editing. The former is hard because weather was awful this season and my balcony only allows for 3h imaging at a time.
