Description

This is my "first light" with some new project gear: I bought a couple of Meade LX70 mounts (same as EQ-5/CG-5) from EBay, added stepper motors, designed and 3D printed motor mounts, built an AstroEQ controller, and set up a Raspberry PI with StellarMate OS. This makes a nice lightweight imaging setup, and I'm hoping to get back to some wide field imaging with my beautiful vintage camera lenses. I'm hoping to run this at the same time as my primary imaging setup.

This image has it's limitations but I'm proud of it because I really struggled to get the whole StellarMate "Ekosystem" under control. In the end I switched from Ekos guiding to PHD2 (which I understand pretty well). I don't have an electronic focuser (next project!) and focusing is a real struggle with this setup; I'm not at optimal focus in this image - these lenses need to focus very slightly to the inside to avoid red halos, and I didn't quite get there. With all the fussing around I only managed to get an hour of data on this pretty view. I was kinda surprised I got anything usable out of the session!
