Description

Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) is a large galaxy cluster that contains more than 1000 identified galaxies.

The average distance of the cluster from Earth is approximately 323 million light years. Its ten brightest spiral galaxies have an apparent magnitude between 12 and 14 and are observable with an amateur telescope with a diameter greater than 200 mm. The central region is dominated by two giant elliptical galaxies: NGC 4874 and NGC 4889. The cluster is located in the sky a few degrees from the north galactic pole. Most of the galaxies in the central part of the Coma cluster are elliptical. Dwarf galaxies as well as giant ellipticals are present in abundance in the cluster.
