Description

Images taken with a newly collimated telescope, over the course of a few hours, after many previous hours of frustration dealing with one weird issue after another.

Anyway.... I haven't shot M42 since 2021, and I figured it's a good target to work the bugs out. I decided to push myself into something new and make an 'HDR' image that doesn't blow out the Trapezium and yet still has detail in the darker areas. I think it turned out pretty good!

Taken with a OSC camera (ASI553), no filters.

I created four stacks with different sub-frame exposure times, all with a gain of 0 to get the maximum well depth, and at -10c. 15, 30, 60 & 300 seconds. I then aligned and stacked those four in median mode with Siril. This gave me the depth I needed to not blow out the core.

After the final stack, I background extracted, color calibrated, and stretched the image in Siril. Then I exported a TIFF format image, which I opened in Gimp. I did some tweaking to the colors, then used the 'Sharpen [Tones]' G'MIC filter with values set to 'Normalize Luma'. This pulled more detail out and also improved the contrast around the Trapezium.
