Description

Messier 106 (also known as NGC 4258) is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. M106 is at a distance of about 22 to 25 million light-years away from Earth. M106 contains an active nucleus classified as a Type 2 Seyfert. Seyfert galaxies are one of the two largest groups of active galaxies, along with quasars. It is one of the largest and brightest nearby galaxies, similar in size and luminosity to the Andromeda Galaxy.

A bit about the image now. I took this image using a remote telecope provided by iTelescope located in New Mexico. I have used used both LRGB and narrowbanf filters for this image. I guess most experts will question my use of the narroband filters for a galaxy image. Normally I wouldn't have done that either. I tried to see whether I could capture those wonderful red filaments that can be seen on the Hubble image of M106. As you can see, that did not work :-). Also, because of the relatively short exposure the quality is not great either.

Also visible in the mage are NGC 4248, NGC 4231, NGC 4232 galaxies. NGC 4231 and NGC 4232 are paired together.
