Description

This object is a trio of galaxies located in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +32 degrees. From right to left, the galaxies are NGC 2964, NGC 2968 and NGC 2970.

NGC 2964 is a spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away. It spans 2.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.

NGC 2968 is an odd galaxy type, looking like an elliptical which had a past merger with a spiral galaxy. It is located 80 million light years away. The galaxy spans 3.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years. The wide dust lane that winds its way through the galaxy is fantastic.

These two galaxies are too far away from each other for their gravitational interaction to have an impact. But NGC 2970, another elliptical galaxy, is about the same distance away as NGC 2968, so these two elliptical galaxies are interacting. A faint star stream connects both galaxies, but that is very hard to see in my image or even in the inverted image.
