Description

NGC 4151 is a spiral galaxy dubbed the "Eye of Sauron" by astronomers for its similarity to the eye of the malevolent character in "The Lord of the Rings".  It is located 52 million light-years from Earth with a diameter of 58 thousand light-years. It is one of the nearest galaxies to Earth to contain an actively growing supermassive black hole having 40 million times the mass of the sum. It is moving away from the earth at 976 kilometers per second.  NGC 4156 is the face on spiral galaxy to the lower left on NGC 4151.  PGC 38811 is the faint galaxy in the lower center of the image.
