Description

The data for this composite image of Jupiter was acquired on the evening of September 6th earlier this year. Seeing was reasonably good, and the planet was roughly 36 degrees above the horizon at the time of capture. I used an ADC, along with a QHY 5iii 178c planetary camera for the image (frame rate of 40 frames / s). I stacked the best 40% of frames from 5 videos (about 6600 frames total) to compile the image. A separate exposure was used for Io, shown here just to the right. I was not able to resolve any details on Io -- I will have to work on this further!

It took me a while to process this data set, but I was relatively happy with how it turned out. I was much more patient with collimation, adjustment of the ADC, and allowing the telescope tube to cool down prior to imaging, which helped improve the data quality. Using a higher gain with the QHY camera (and a better solid-state hard drive) also allowed me to use a higher frame rate. I believe this camera should be capable of even faster data transfer than than 40 fps, but I may need to do some further optimization with the USB settings.
