Ha LRGB. Seeing was consistent throughout. My goal was to bring out the faint extensions, but the sky is quite bright, so its difficult.

2 days after I completed this image a super nova (Type 1a?) appeared in the lower spiral arm of M101. I collected a few additional hours of luminance when the SN was 3 days old. My thinking was since the SN is the brightest feature of the galaxy at this time--brighter than all other stars, it would certainly clip in an RBG composition--ending up being a colorless star. So, luminance seemed to be the way to go. I considered an HDR composition using very short RGB subs combined with longer subs. The short subs would recover the clipped data. However, I didn't really have the time for this. Also, I am not certain, but I don't think SN when at peak, or rising to peak, are very colorful. So, luminance remained the best option. To see the SN, blink between version M and Version J.

It was fortuitous that the SN occurred right after I completed (thought I completed) this image, as it afforded me the opportunity to do a before and after image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
