Description

This object, known as both Arp 22 and NGC 4027, is a small galaxy approximately 80 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus at a declination of -19 degrees.   This galaxy lies less than 1 degree southwest of the famous Antennae Galaxies.

This object is the 22nd object in the Arp catalogue, which can be seen in its 338 member entirety in this series of posters.

This magnitude 11 galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a small diameter of 40,000 light years.

This galaxy may seem unusual in that it only has one arm, but that is a sign that it is a Magellan galaxy. My poster of Magellan galaxies is seen here.

Magellan galaxies all have the following characteristics:
- Asymmetric shape
- Off-center white stellar bar
- One dominant arm
- Blue star formation areas
- Small diameter, between 15,000 and 40,000 light years

Scientists are still trying to understand the formation mechanism for such a unique looking type of galaxy.
