Description

Abell 74
PK 72.7-17.1

Abell 74 is a large, Ancient Planetary Nebula in Vulpecula with a distance of 2500 LY from Earth. The Progenitor Star is the tiny blue star just above and to the left of the large central star. Click on image to magnify and bring it into view.

Astrophotographers BEWARE! This one is extremely faint!

My first attempt on Abell 74 with 5-minute subs was futile. After viewing the first 2 subs that came in, no Nebulosity showed up, only stars. I thought maybe the plate solving was off or a Stellarium error, so I cancelled the target and proceeded to my backup.

After doing more research, I concluded that longer subs were needed. So, this time I attempted
8-minute subs. Finally, it was showing up! There is some Oxygen in the central core and I had to stretch it out to resolve it from the limited O3 data in my stacked image. 20x600" subs for each filter would have been ideal.

Thanks, Eddie
