Description

I was lucky with the weather this morning, and was able to view today’s total lunar eclipse. For this image, I tried using my 80 mm refractor (focal length 480 mm) coupled with my QHY 5iii 178C color planetary camera. Under these conditions, the full disc of the moon just barely fits on the camera sensor. The moon was just within the Earth's shadow for this eclipse, so the northern edge of the disc was quite bright compared with the rest of the surface. To better account for the difference in brightness, I set the camera to 16 bit mode. I then acquired 60 seconds worth of video (roughly 500 frames total) with a gain setting of 24 and exposure time of 100 ms.

Following data capture, I stacked the 500 frames and sharpened the resulting image in Registax. I then performed noise reduction using Neat Image Pro.
