Description

Image includes most of the Vela supernova remnant (SNR). When looking into the often photographed Pencil Nebula on the left of the image it is easy to see the huge scale of the Vela SNR.

After researching the image I learned that the image also includes a small part of an even bigger SNR, Gum Nebula. According to my sources it is the largest single entity that is fully visible from the Earth because Milky Way is not fully visible from anywhere.

I also made an annotated version of the image. Non-catalog names there are from a book by Stephen Chadwick and Ian Cooper: Imaging the Southern Sky. I also included Vela Pulsar although I know only the approximate location of it.

This image is a three panel mosaic processed in HOO narrowband palette. Data is from Telescope Live telescopes in Heaven’s Mirror Observatory, Australia.
