Description

This Messier globular cluster is located 25,000 light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +2 degrees.  It is a magnitude 5.9 cluster which spans 17 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 130 light years.

As compared to other Messier globular clusters, this cluster is brighter and larger than average.  It has a medium concentration, with a Shapley–Sawyer Rating of 5 (out of 12).

This cluster has the nickname of the Rose Cluster - why, I do not know.  As a rule, I do not see specific shapes in globular clusters, although I do sometimes see linear asterism patterns in the stars (not much in this one, though).
