M51 (
NGC 5194 ou
galaxie du Tourbillon) est une
galaxie spirale relativement rapprochée et située dans la
constellation des
Chiens de chasse. Sa vitesse par rapport au
fond diffus cosmologique est de 633 ± 12 km/s, ce qui correspond à une
distance de Hubble de 9,34 ± 0,68
Mpc (∼30,5 millions d'
a.l.). Elle a été découverte par l'astronome
françaisCharles Messier en
1773.En compagnie de
NGC 5195, quelquefois désignée comme M51B, M51 forme un couple de
galaxies en interaction qui figure dans l'
atlas des galaxies particulières de
Halton Arp sous la cote Arp 85.NGC 5194 a été utilisée par
Gérard de Vaucouleurs comme une galaxie de
type morphologique SA(s)bc dans son atlas des galaxies.

Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as
Messier 51a (
M51a) or
NGC 5194, is an
interactinggrand-designspiral galaxy with a
Seyfert 2active galactic nucleus.It lies in the
constellationCanes Venatici, and was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy.It is about 31 million
light-years (9.5
Mpc) away from Earth and 76,900 ly (23,580 pc) in diameter.The galaxy and its companion,
NGC 5195, are easily observed by
amateur astronomers, and the two galaxies may be seen with
binoculars. The Whirlpool Galaxy has been extensively observed by professional astronomers, and its pair with NGC 5195 who study it to understand galaxy structure (particularly structure associated with the
spiral arms) and galaxy interactions. Its pair with
NGC 5194 is among the most famous and relatively close interacting systems, and thus is a favorite subject of galaxy interaction models.
