Earlier this month, I was telling an astronomy colleague about how my first astrophotograph was not the Orion Nebula (a target to astrophotographers as Stairway to Heaven is to drummers), but actually NGC 7331.

My wife had bought me my wishlisted EdgeHD 8" SCT and a mount for my birthday in July 2018. I quickly knew I wanted to take pictures instead of looking through an eyepiece. I purchased a ZWO ASI120MM-S and after much reading, I was coming up on a target which fit my FOV well: NGC 7331. I was new to it all.

Fast forward to later that summer, after more reading and head banging and anxious to photograph something, I had just finished capturing an hour or so of monochrome data when we were supposed to go over to a neighbor's house for dinner. To keep an eye on the progress, I opened up port 3389 on my imaging laptop to the internet (I know, I know) so I could remote desktop to it. By the time we came home, I realized my laptop was unresponsive. When I rebooted it, to my horror, I immediately noticed it had been hacked and all contents were encrypted for a ransom. It literally took a port sniffer about 3 hours to find my open port and hack into my laptop via Microsoft Remote Desktop.

So, earlier this month, I set out to right my foolish network security choices and recapture one of my favorite galaxies, second only to Andromeda. With that, I hope you enjoy my latest attempt at NGC 7331.

Submitted The date and time when you submitted this image for IOTD/TP consideration.	...
Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
