Description

The Dumbbell Nebula (M27) is located about 1200 light years from earth in the constellation Vulpecula (The Fox) and is the first "planetary nebula" discovered in 1764 by Charles Messier (the "M" in M27). When seen by a good set of binoculars or a small telescope throughout the summer and fall, it will have a more characteristic "dumbbell" shape.

A planetary nebula is what happens when a intermediate star reaches its end of life and fusion stops. A red giant is formed and the core eventually falls in on itself forming a white dwarf star. The outer atmosphere/gas that has been ejected is ionized giving off the colors you see in this image.

Two interesting facts about planetary nebula: 1) This is actually how our Sun is supposed to end its life cycle in roughly five billion years (our Sun is middle aged for those that wonder); 2) while the star at the center of this and other planetary nebulas live for billions of years...the planetary nebula is only around for about 10,000 years before fading so we are lucky to see this giant Dumbbell at all!
