#Attempting to learn Pixinsight. Followed a tutorial on SPCC and applied the settings suggested. Prior I downloaded the recommended Gaia files into Pixinsight.

Many of my stars have an offensive magenta color. The Nebula is very violet. I'm not sure how to insert a photo for you viewing because the photo size is 4.7 MB.

Any Suggestions how to correct the ugly colors?

Hello Dennis,
Lots to know, 1st are you trying to calibrate NB data or BB data? Depending on what your calibrating can determine what settings you need.
Also once you run the SPCC on your “linear” image you need to kill the stretch and then reauto stretch either with the nuclear button on the top menu bar or in the STF. You need to make sure to “unlink” the channels on the STF.

As far as uploading just click this button and upload the file.

Lots of information here, Dale. I'm new, so I need to unbundle it.

Not sure what is NB or BB data?

My first step was to stack the files. Then I saw no improvement with background extraction, so I did not do that. Went to SPCC.

I followed Sasha from View into Space and he performed SPCC on the stretched image (the Nuclear Box in the file  menu)

How do I unlink the channels in STF and what is STF?

Finally when I tried to include an image with this post, it said my file size was too large. It was a file, transferred from my iPhone screen shot and the properties says it's 4.7 MB.

Dennis,
STF ScreenTransferFunction the top left icon in the STF popup box (chainlink) unlinks. NB narrow band, BB broad band. Are you doing OSC one shot color, or mono and filters? My suggestion is to go watch this youtube video for OSC processing and you will have it down. You can build your processing methods and tools from that starting point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vID6DUuRPn4&t=1027s

I never managed to even make SPCC work at all ... downloaded everything, tried a 100 times, there are always errors in the console ...

What errors are you seeing? I've only seen two in my early days of using SPCC (early days = a few months ago). Either no astronomical data, or it can't find the GAIA library. Easy fix for either. It's a great tool.

NB = Narrowband data shot with a narrowband filter
BB = Broadband data...usually no filter at all or a UV/IR cut (luminance) filter or maybe a gentle "light pollution" filter that doesn't cut out alot of light.

Different ones. I cannot check right now, but it goes through all the process, it does stuff, and measeures stars and what not and it shows all that in console, but at the end it says something along the lines of "zero samples, need at least 5" or so. Other times it said other things.

Scott Horton, a regular DSO contributor to this forum, worked virtually with me last night for 3 1/2 hours, setting up Pixinsight for me and walking through the steps to process M45 to completion. Wonderful to work with and so knowledgeable about the tools available in Pix. So grateful he had the time to help and for this website that is so full of useful information .

It could happen in a sparsely populated region of the sky if the limit magnitude is too strict. I wonder whether the same would apply to PCC.

Hello Dennis,
1st I’m so sorry that I wasn’t able to follow up with you on this! Some family issues popped up and I couldn’t follow through with you. I normally follow up when I post a reply like you were asking for.
@DavesView  pretty much answered your questions,
3rd, I’m really glad someone was able to help you get it figured out!

Congrats on that!

Again, my apologies for not being able to follow with you and thanks to the others that helped!

PI team took a perfectly working feature and broke the crap out of it and made it useless. Could never get it to work, or I haven't spent  8 million hours trying to get it to work..

What's that about, pray? 'Cause I can't think of any....

I guess the 1st thing I’d have to ask is do you platesolve the image 1st before you attempt to run SPCC on your image?
A lot of people don’t know that about the SPCC process.

Basically all videos I watched or posts I read of people using SPCC is when they use PI to stack the images and then "it works".
Well, I don't use PI to stack the images. I use AstroPixelProcessor.
I then indeed used the Image Solver to plate solve the images.
And then I used SPCC, with every possible setting and combination. It is not about a specific one image with sparse stars or something - it happens with EVERY IMAGE.
Last time I tried is my last astrophoto - the M81 (you can see it in my profile). While SPCC was "running" it would show in the  console that it "recognized" thousands of stars, and that would go on like that for minutes, walls of text with SPCC doing stuff ... but at the end it fails every time with a message similar to what I posted, about "zero samples ... 5 samples needed" or something like that.

EDIT: for the fun of it, I even tried it with WBPP --- so stacked the M81 with that.
Still the same result.

It is the same even with stacking in WBPP like you pointed out,

PI team sometimes complicate the crap out of some of their best features. They don’t realize the common user is not a phd like them..

If 99% of the people is using those features without issues and you can't maybe, just maybe, the problem lies with you rather than the program.

For what it is worth, the struggles I faced, which led to me posting my original question to this thread, was my images were not well focused. I had plenty of data, but Pix struggled and would fail because my stars were not well focused. Scott Horton recognized that and with a work around using the Pix software he rearranged the steps usually followed and processed a beautiful final image.  The problem lay in the data I was expecting Pix to process, not in the Pix software.

How did you arrive at 99% of all Pix users have no issues, kinda curious.  Quoting sweeping stats gets me 😂

I do the same thing, process everything in APP and then post process with PI. I’ve had some of the errors in the past that your referring to and one of the things I realized after doing some research as I forgot that I binned an image or something in the image scale is off.

My suggestion is to offer up your integrated image for other experienced users to download and give it a try. I’m positive your missing something and without a file NONE of us can help you.

Another option is to go right to the source and post your issue right in the PI forum’s. I have done that in the past and usually within an hour I have answers to give a try.

If you do it here on AB you might even want to post a separate thread.

Just my suggestions.

Have you installed and set up all the necessary databases for SPCC? Apparently the latest version requires the Gaia DR3/SP databases.
