Hi,

Sony cameras and sensors (used eg in Nikon DSLRs) before 2012 or so are not very good for astrophotography because they use various filters that distort colours and even eliminate small stars completely.

A Canon EOS Rebel T2i would be much better value for the money.

Cheers,
D.

Hello Carter11,

Dis-recommended, simply because the Sony A700 has no swivel monitor. Your poor husband will break his neck when focusing objects high up in the sky.
Further:
1. Memory Stick Duo is no good
2. Pixel size of 5.48µm is too large for short focal length telescopes.
3. Big body and 770gr is a lot of weight
4. It is 13 years old
5. Poor battery life
6. Not sure, but maybe no internal intervalometer

Canon is most popular among amateur astronomers, but I am quite satisfied with my Nikon D5300. Perhaps your husband can purchase a second hand DSLR. He will need the body only and it needs to be fully operable in manual mode only. Important is a clean sensor without scratches.

Perhaps this helps:

In essential functions the Nikon D5600 is similar to Nikon D5500 and Nikon D5300

Cheers
Robert

Oh yeah, a Nikon D5300 would be immensely better. Nikonite here, too. But I assumed we were talking about the price range of ~$200 or less.

Yep, that's correct. For this reason I recommended a used model  8)
