Hi guys. Bit of a weird one this one. So I have the Rasa 8 that I pair the Zwo 183mc pro with. I really like diffraction spikes on stars that some telescopes give and I don't think I cam get that on the Rasa. I think most people try to avoid it but I think it looks really cool. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows how I can achieve diffraction spikes on my stars with the Rasa?

Hi Abdul,
I think you can spread the cables from the camera and they will produce the spikes on the images.

So spread the cables to the sides and maybe tape them as well?

So spread the cables to the sides and maybe tape them as well? It needs to be a cross pattern, just like the spider of a Newton. Tbh, why didn‘t you buy a newton XD?

Two pieces of string pulled tight with tape (on the sides) at right angles across the aperture will do it.

Hi John. I have the Rasa where the camera goes at the front,so how does this work? Have you got any picture for me to see?

Yeah, it might be a bit more complicated with RASA but if you just cross the strings over the back of the camera (crossing at the middle), it should work just fine. The strings just need to be pulled so that they are straight. Unfortunately I don't have a photo and I'm not in a place where I can make a drawing. It's so easy that you can just try it to see how it works...and if you don't like it, just pull the strings off!

Many options for perfekt spikes. Alternative you can use a 3d printer and put a spike mask on top of you rasa. I used to have one for apos, but spikes look strange on short focal lenght images

Hi John. I have the Rasa where the camera goes at the front,so how does this work? Have you got any picture for me to see? Are you using a dew shield? If not, use it and put the strings that John mentioned on top of it and you are done! Ciao. Lorenzo

Yes I do use an aluminium dew shield A Fishing line (nylon cord) would give stronger result, as it refracts light going through it, which creates much stronger effect that diffraction itself. It's pretty much similar to flat spider vanes of the Newtonian, where majority of light in the spikes comes from reflection off vanes surface, not from diffraction itself.

Google "StarSpikes Pro" they offer spikes in different colors and shapes you can play with to your hearts content The lower left spike was added by StarSpikes pro (FYI) not everyone likes them, and most true astronomers hate them! But they can add a little sparkle *

Hey Abdul,
I think this will do the trick, it’s a 3d printed model of a spikes mask/cable management for the rasa 8. It will help you keep your cables properly aligned and generate uniform spikes.

Abdul,
I also prefer the look of diffraction spikes on my RASA-11 images, so added vanes to an aluminum dew shield and routed the data and power cables along these. I use a flat ribbon data cable that has a thickness about matching the diameter of the power cable on the other vane, so the orthogonal spikes are luminance balanced to one another visually. These cables are held in place with clips and black theatrical (aka "gaffer's") tape.
Take care that any odd angles in flexing these cables take place within the light path that the camera with block from contributing odd flares into the image.
The usual thing of routing the cables in a semi-circular bend through the optical path broadened all the stars with circular haloes, as that diffraction effect spreads the light at all angles. The RASA's images are noticeably sharper since making this change.

cs *** So how do I purchase it?*** You will need to download the model, and take it to any local 3d printing service in your area. I did a quick search, for UK, and this popped up, but im sure youll do a better job finding one, cause im not in UK.
When you download the model there are 3 models, you will need to download the Rasa 3mm or 6mm (that's the size of the cable tray).
You should also provide the link to the 3d service so they know what exactly they are printing if they need to check any info.

It should fit, where the cover goes, I don't have a rasa, but i printed something similar for my C6. If you look at the bottom right of the link you will find a picture someone who's already printed this and used it, posted.
