Milky Way Core from Steens Mountain summit - 35mm Panorama (16161x10005) - 9/8/2023

Milky Way Core over Wildhorse Canyon and Wildhorse Lake as seen from Steens Mountain summit, Oregon.

I have been working on this 35mm version for awhile. I posted the 14mm version several weeks ago although I'm not entirely happy with that version.

This panorama is large enough to hypothetically cover a wall.

This version had several problems that delayed its completion. Namely, my original panoramic sequence had insufficient height. The tracked sky that night ended up being only about 1 frame high. I attempted to reshoot the sky the following evening to get a 2h x 3w replacement. I immediately saw some promising sky glow in my shots in the back of camera view. Upon returning home, however, I noted that the horizon line didn't match the foreground panorama at all. I tried several edits trying to blend the two together in a way that reflected the actual view as it existed, but nothing looked right. Being a bit of a stickler for realism I shelved the project for a few weeks. I came back around to it today and was finally able to get a composite that I feel is authentic.

The panorama is composed of six 35mm 2 minute single exposures for the tracked sky and nine 35mm 5 minute exposures for the foreground. The middle rows overlap considerably.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
