Description

NGC 224, M 31 is the Andromeda Galaxy. It is the closest major galaxy to the Milky Way but is still over 2 million light years distant. The photo also shows two small companion galaxies. The Andomeda and Milky Way galaxies are moving towards each other at 68 miles per second and will collide in about 4 billion years. Due to the vast distances between stars it is not likely any stars will collide. However, gravity will tear apart the spiral structures and they will reform as a single ball of stars called an elliptical galaxy.
