Description

Description:  The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as M51 or NGC 5194, is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici, about 23 million light-years away from Earth. It is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies in the night sky and is a popular target for amateur and professional astronomers. The galaxy's spiral arms, which are filled with young, hot stars, and dark dust lanes, are particularly striking. The galaxy is also notable for its close companion galaxy, NGC 5195, which is thought to have played a role in the formation of the Whirlpool's spiral structure. The Whirlpool Galaxy was first discovered by Charles Messier in 1773.

Narrative:  This is a re-imagining of an earlier processing attempt.  One of the challenges with this target is the haloing that occur around the very bright, very colorful stars in the galactic spiral arms.  It took many iterations to figure out how to deal with these, and in the end it required a fair amount of fidgeting.  The overall image is much nicer as well; apparently my processing skills have improved over the past 8 months.  I may circle back to capture this target again; perhaps high-quality filters will have less-pronounced halos.
