Description

This object is a barred face-on grand spiral galaxy located 45 million light years away in the constellation of Grus at a declination of -42 degrees. This galaxy spans 7.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

The galaxy has a strong central bar. Bright star clusters are seen on some of the winding arms. In addition to the 2 main “grand spiral” arms, this galaxy also has other short curvy arms which extend out from the core. This galaxy has been nicknamed the Crab Galaxy because of these arms.

This galaxy is a tough one for those of us in the northern hemisphere to image, because of its low declination combined with its low brightness.
