Description

Most of the galaxies arcing across this image are in the Perseus galaxy cluster, which lies at a distance of about 250 million light-years. The galaxy with the unusual filaments near the upper left is NGC 1275: the supermassive black hole in this giant elliptical galaxy is busy consuming enormous quantities of matter, making the galaxy "active" in x-ray and radio emissions. The cluster is dominated by elliptical and lenticular galaxies, two notable exceptions being the small spiral NGC 1268 near the image centre, and the barred-spiral NGC 1264 on the right, both seen nearly face-on. The Perseus galaxy cluster is itself only part of the much larger Pisces-Perseus supercluster, which contains over 1,000 galaxies. At the distance of the cluster, this field of view (about 27' across) spans about 15 million light years. The image resolution is about 0.62" pixel. Acquisition was done over multiple nights between September 11 2021 and January 6 2022, with about 22 hours of integration in total, split roughly equally between luminance and colour (RGB).
